College basketball scores: Creighton, Villanova remain tied atop Big East

Dave Weaver-USA TODAY Sports

In a rare Friday night with major conference action, college basketball fans were treated to two Top 25 teams. Creighton and Villanova entered the night in a tie atop the new-look Big East. The night ended with the two remaining locked atop the standings.

No. 6 Villanova 70, Seton Hall 53

Jay Wright hit the 400 career win mark as his Wildcats easily handled the Pirates of Seton Hall. It was the 10th win in 11 games for the Wildcats, with the only loss coming to conference co-leader Creighton.

The Pirates were just no match for Villanova. The Wildcats came into the second half with an eight-point lead. Sterling Gibbs scored the first basket of the second half for the Pirates, but it was then followed by an 8-0 Wildcat run. The game was never again in single digits.

Four Wildcats scored in double figures, led by James Bell with 20. Sophomore Daniel Ochefu had the first double-double of his career, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

No. 12 Creighton 78, DePaul 66

Wooden Award favorite Doug McDermott had another big night for the Bluejays, scoring 32 and grabbing nine rebounds in leading his team to victory over DePaul. The score doesn't indicate how close this game was throughout, hovelver

DePaul controlled the glass, outrebounding Creighton by double digits, and it is the main reason the Blue Demons were in the game despite shooting 37 percent. The problem that DePaul ran into was arguably the best player in the country doing best player in the country things. When the Creighton lead was cut to four by a Billy Garrett Jr. layup with 6:16 left in the game, McDermott took matters into his own hands. He missed a three on the ensuing possession, but followed it up with a flurry of scoring.

He poured in the game's next nine points, with seven of them coming from the free throw line. When his run was over, he had pushed the lead to, 73-60, with two minutes left, and the game was in Creighton's control.
