Williams, 41, has served as the head coach of the Marquette Golden Eagles for the last six seasons and often been the subject of offseason rumors after quickly finding success with the program. Under the direction of Williams, the team made five consecutive NCAA Tournaments, including the Sweet 16 in each of the last three years.
With expectations high for the 2013-14 season, Marquette didn't qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005 after finishing with a 17-15 record, losing four straight to end the year. The Golden Eagles also did not receive a bid in the NIT.
At Virginia Tech, Williams will have his hands full turning around a program that has qualified for the NCAA Tournament only once since 1996. They were eliminated in the second round of the 2007 tournament. The Hokies finished last in the ACC standings this year after losing 17 of their final 18 games.
