Was Yuri Wright's Offer From Notre Dame Still Good?

Yesterday, Colorado received some excellent news from Yuri Wright, one of the top cornerbacks in the country, as the New Jersey prospect commited to the Buffaloes over the Notre Dame, Rutgers and others.

But now one website is claiming that his offer from Notre Dame was not still valid. Steve Wilftong of 247 Sports says that the staff chose to move in another direction, just as Michigan is thought to have done when it discovered Wright’s tweets. Wiltfong is a seasoned recruiting reporter, but the circumstances here are suspect. Namely, no reputable outlet reported that his scholarship offer had been revoked by Notre Dame prior to him committing elsewhere.

Was Wright’s offer from Notre Dame still valid? We’ll likely never know for sure, as he has not elected to comment on the matter, and college coaches are prohibited by NCAA rule from commenting on prospective student athletes. It will be interesting to see if Wright opens up on the matter, or of Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelley elects to speak about Wright at a later date.

Yuri Wright Commits To Colorado Over Rutgers And Notre Dame, According To Report

Yuri Wright, one of the top defensive back recruits in the country has committed to the Colorado Buffaloes, per a report by BuffScoop.com. Out of Ramsey (N.J.) Don Bosco Prep, Wright is a top-flight defender and had offers many top BCS schools. His top choices included the Michigan Wolverines, Rutgers Scarlet Knights, Georgia Bulldogs, Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Wright is rated four-stars by most national recruiting services.

SI.com's Andy Staples: For recruits like Yuri Wright, social media behavior has consequences

At 6'2" and 185 pounds, Wright has prototypical size for the position. He's long and strong, and his speed is adequate. He's extremely versatile, and should have no problem playing both man and zone coverage. And he's not afraid to be physical with opposing receivers. There are very few weaknesses in Wright's game that can't be fixed with some coaching and experience. If he stays healthy and works hard, Wright has all the talent to be an All-Pac 12 performer. Colorado is getting a player who should definitely see significant snaps from day one.

Wright recently ran into a bit of trouble, as he was expelled from his school over some inappropriate Twitter messages. The same twitter messages also reportedly led to Michigan rescinding his offer.

Yuri Wright Dismissed Over Twitter Comments

Yuri Wright, one of the top cornerback recruits in the country, was dismissed from his school Wednesday by Don Bosco Prep (N.J.) after posting many inflammatory and inappropriate comments via his Twitter account, according to a report by the the Record/Herald-News.

It is believed that Michigan stopped recruiting Wright recently over the same twitter comments:

But a far more interesting, humorous and vulgar reason may be the true cause behind the move. Wright is a very active tweeter. And sometimes, it appears that he forgets (or does not care) that he has 1,600+ followers. As the screenshots on Chat Sports show (NSFW), Wright really went at it, posting a number of tweets that would make any prospective school queasy.

It should be noted that Wright's twitter was private. But he accepted the follow requests of more than 1,600 people, including many members of the media.

High-profile recruits need to realize that they are under the microscope. Whether a school should be disciplining a student for comments he made outside of school is outside the purview of this recruiting column, but once these recruits reach the next level, colleges will not be tolerant of these antics.

Max Preps recruiting analyst Stephen Spiewak tweeted that Wright was "radioactive."

Why Did Michigan Stop Recruiting Yuri Wright?

Yuri Wright is one of the top defensive back prospects in the country. Most recruiting services rate him four-stars. Out of New Jersey's Don Bosco Prep, he's received offers from most of the top BCS schools in the country. And it's easy to see why. Wright has elite size at 6'2" and 180 pounds, can press receivers, and drives on the ball well. Yet he is still able to turn and run.

So it was curious, then, that Wright canceled his upcoming visit to Michigan. Michigan insiders say that the Wolverines have stopped recruiting Wright altogether.

But there's a lot of speculation as to the reason for Michigan's sudden about-face. Some believe that Wright's showing at the U.S. Army All-America Bowl was such that the Wolverines now believe Wright needs to play safety, as opposed to corner.

But a far more interesting, humorous and vulgar reason may be the true cause behind the move. Wright is a very active tweeter. And sometimes, it appears that he forgets (or does not care) that he has 1600+ followers. As the screenshots on Chat Sports show (NSFW), Wright really went at it, posting a number of tweets that would make any prospective school queasy.

In any case, Michigan is out, and it looks like Notre Dame or Rutgers for Wright.

Yuri Wright: Notre Dame's Replacement For Ronald Darby?

Yuri Wright is arguably the top cornerback prospect in the country. Out of New Jersey's Don Bosco Prep, he's received offers from most of the top BCS schools in the country. And it's easy to see why. Wright has elite size at 6'2" and 180 pounds, can press receivers, and drives on the ball well. Yet he is still able to turn and run.

Wright visited Notre Dame on December 16th, and was complimentary of the visit. At that time, Notre Dame held a commitment from Maryland cornerback Ronald Darby. Darby has since decommitted and is considering Florida State and Clemson, among others.

Notre Dame fans are hopeful that the thinning of the potential depth chart thanks to Darby's departure will be enough to sway him to South Bend. And indeed many recruiting insiders believe this will be the case. Wright had dinner with Notre Dame's coaches after the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio. Notre Dame really needs Wright, as it has had a difficult time securing commitments from elite defensive backs.

Notre Dame isn't the only school Wright is considering, however, as he is still scheduled to take visits elsewhere. One Michigan website stated that Wright would not be visiting Ann Arbor on January 13th, but two other sources say he will. Majority wins, as the Wolverines appear to be expecting Wright. Following that, he'll visit the hometown Rutgers Scarlet Knights, and then take a trip out to see the Cal Bears.
