Anthony Alford, one of the top quarterbacks in the country, has committed to Southern Miss. Alford stars for Petal (Ms.) High School, and holds over 15 offers, including LSU, Southern Miss, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Nebraska.
Alford is an excellent athlete at 6'0" and 205 pounds. He has a leggy build, and moves like a receiver or a slashing tailback. Alford has a quick, awkward delivery with a lot of wrist motion. He's very effective with it in high school, and has a decent arm. His delivery will need some polishing in college, and he definitely needs to keep his elbow up. Alford does show the ability to put some touch on the football, and throws well on the run.
Alford will be a tremendous fit in the spread option offense. His feel for the reads and the option is excellent. And it appears he could add additional muscle to help absorb the hits.
If he doesn't play quarterback at the next level, however, he could still be an excellent slash/slot player.
Alford was named the Gatorade State Player of the Year in Mississippi.
