College football recruiting rewind: Florida and Georgia brawling, Ohio State stays hot

With conference championships finished, colleges turned their focus to recruiting, and a busy weekend was the result. Florida added three highly-touted recruits over the weekend and will challenge Georgia for the SEC's top class. Meanwhile, Urban Meyer continues to bring in elite talent at Ohio State.

Florida adds three; will challenge Georgia for SEC's top class

The weekend largely belonged to the Florida Gators, who added three star commitments. Alligator Army is one of SB Nation's best sites, and they are all over it.

Florida football recruiting: Gators add huge JUCO OL Trenton Brown - Alligator Army
Florida got a long-awaited commitment from massive offensive lineman Trenton Brown on Sunday. Once a Georgia commitment, Brown felt comfortable in Gainesville and likes the opportunity to play early.

Sunday surprise: Matt Rolin commits to Florida, drops South Carolina - Alligator Army
Florida's Class of 2013 just got a little deeper in the linebacker corps with another four-star commitment.

Roderick Johnson re-commits to Florida, adds to Gators' flock - Alligator Army
Roderick Johnson decommitted from Florida in August. Now, in December, he's back on board. The big offensive linemen will probably finish out Florida's class at the position.

Florida needed to add significant numbers at linebacker and offensive line with the 2013 class, and has hit a home run at both positions both in number and in quality.

While Florida celebrates, South Carolina site Garnet and Black Attack analyzes the loss of Rolin and asks if there is something wrong with South Carolina's recruiting.

South Carolina Gamecocks Football: What's the story with our recruiting woes? - Garnet And Black Attack
With some big misses and a couple of big de-commitments, is there trouble with USC recruiting? Or is it just part of the growing pains of trying to become a consistent elite program?

My take? No. Florida is one of the two or three best programs in the country, and South Carolina is not. That South Carolina now wonders if there is a problem after losing a recruit to Florida shows just how far the Gamecocks program has come under Steve Spurrier.

While Florida does have a great shot at the No. 1 class, Georgia cannot be counted out. That's especially true if the Bulldogs land star linebacker Reuben Foster. Remember, Georgia can take as many as 36 players this year due to attrition and not taking a full class in previous seasons.

If the Bulldogs are able to land the four high level recruits they're chasing, they will have the nation's number one rated recruiting class for 2013.

Reuben Foster decommits from Auburn: Georgia bound? -
Auburn loses one of its top recruits, a consensus five-star and likely the best linebacker prospect in the country.

It's no secret that the Mississippi State Bulldogs needed help at receiver. And they got it over the weekend, instantly, in the form of two JUCO receiver commitments.

Notre Dame adds star running back Greg Bryant

Big news for fans of the Irish as Florida runner Greg Bryant joined #IrishMob13 (the hash tag being used on Twitter by the Notre Dame commitments). But Notre Dame wasn't done, as the Irish also added a talented junior offensive lineman. Bryant could contend for early playing time at Notre Dame, though I wonder if this recruitment is finished.

Penn State cashes in with four commitments

The Nittany Lions hosted a big recruiting weekend and made the most of it, adding four commitments. I also had a chance to see Penn State commitment Neiko Robinson this weekend in the Florida state finals, and he was excellent. Penn State has a true steal there.
