Clemson landed a commitment from linebacker recruit Ben Boulware. But should they have accepted the commitment given the Tigers' needs?
No, he's not part of that South Carolina Boulware family, but Ben Boulware is still a decent linebacker prospect. Out of Anderson (S.C.) T.L. Hannah High School, the three-star committed to Clemson on Wednesday night, according to Clemson site Shakin The Southland. Boulware is 6'2" and 230 pounds, which makes him much bigger than the typical linebacker recruited by new Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables, formerly of Oklahoma.
Shakin The Southland is not particularly thrilled with the commitment. They say that Boulware is stiff in the hips, not very athletic after adding bulk, and though strong, doesn't use his hands very well. And they are really not happy with the allocation of scholarships by the Clemson staff, particularly using too many on linebackers when Clemson is going to run a lot of nickel defense (using two linebackers instead of three) for much of the time.
The editors at Shakin The Southland are some of the sharpest football minds in the SB Nation family, and they have good connections in South Carolina and the surrounding areas. This story is well worth your time.
