South Carolina football recruiting: Gamecocks keeping pace in SEC

Streeter Lecka

The Gamecocks have a top 20 recruiting class, but that's only good enough for middle of the pack in the SEC. Here's a closer look at who South Carolina has coming to Columbia next year.

The world of recruiting in the SEC is a cutthroat place, but the South Carolina Gamecocks are keeping pace with their conference rivals. The Gamecocks have 20 commitments in their 2013 class, which is ranked anywhere between 16 in 20 in the major recruiting service rankings. Even though they're in the top 20 in the nation, that puts them in the middle of the pack in the SEC.

The good news for South Carolina is that they haven't had to deal with turnover in the coaching staff, which can wreck a class if the wrong coach leaves. Here is a closer look at a few of South Carolina's bigger commits:

Larenz Bryant: The four star outside linebacker from Charlotte is rated as one of the top OLB prospects in the country. At 6-foot-1, 213 pounds, he'll need to bulk up a little, but can move pretty well for a linebacker (4.6 40 yard dash).

Kelsey Griffin: At 6-foot-2, 290 pounds, Griffin is a load in the middle at defensive tackle. The four star prospect from Mill Creek, Ga. will help bolster an already strong Carolina front seven.

David Williams: Williams is South Carolina's most recent commit, as he just decided on Jan. 4. The four star running back from Philadelphia will help provide some depth in the backfield for the Gamecocks, giving them another option to help replace the departing Marcus Lattimore.

Connor Mitch: A four star pro style quarterback from Raleigh, Mitch gives the Gamecocks a lot of depth at the quarterback position behind Connor Shaw and Dylan Thompson
