Mike Mitchell at the US Army bowl. - Wescott Eberts (SB Nation)
The athletic linebacker grew up a fan of Buckeye head coach Urban Meyer when he was at Florida.
The Ohio State Buckeyes need some help at linebacker and got it on Wednesday morning when 2013 Plano (Texas) Prestonwood Christian's Mike Mitchell signed and faxed in his letter of intent.
A consensus four-star prospect, Mitchell grew up a fan of Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer when he was a young Florida fan. Ohio State led through most of his recruitment, nearly securing a commitment before Mitchell even visited Columbus. After taking an official visit to Ohio State in early December, Mitchell made the expected call for the Buckeyes at the 2013 US Army All-American Bowl.
Here's a small part of the scouting report on the 6-4, 225-pound prospect:
Having reportedly run a laser-timed sub-4.5 40 and recorded a 40-inch vertical leap, Mitchell has freakish athleticism and his speed is evident when covering kicks and catching receivers from behind well down the field. It's truly a sight to see Mitchell at top speed, churning away with his high knees. Based on his film, the reported 40 time could well be accurate.
An invitee to The Opening after a strong performance at the Fort Worth NFTC back in March, Mitchell has a chance to put up a SPARQ rating among the best at the camp, but the most intriguing drill for him could be the shuttle, as his short-area burst doesn't quite match his top-end speed. Having the information about how well he does in that drill could be indicative of his upside at defensive end, where his first several steps would be much more important than his speed at a dead sprin
Mitchell did indeed turn in a remarkable performance at The Opening, registering a 4.39 40 and winning the SPARQ national championship.
During his insanely productive senior season, Mitchell racked up 174 tackles and five forced fumbles, a year after picking up 11 sacks and making 32 tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
