Michael Hutchings signs with USC: Versatile linebacker can plug and play

Soobum Im-USA TODAY Sports

Michael Hutchings is the type of linebacker who can play anywhere the USC Trojans want him to play.

De La Salle linebacker Michael Hutchings has been well-publicized for a few years now, and his pledge to the USC Trojans this summer was no big surprise. Hutchings is one of many top recruits who figures to crack the Trojans' rotation early.

Hutchings does one thing extremely well - tackle. He gets right to his man and uses excellent technique to get low and take out his opponent's forward motion. He also takes good angles to find his man and take him down in open space. Here is the scouting report on Hutchings.

Hutchings is explosive on contact and plays with excellent leverage, making strong form tackles that surrender little, if any, yards after contact. Hutchings can be a bit tight hipped and often will have to take an elongated step in order to gather himself prior to redirecting in space or transitioning to flow laterally against outside runs. Once he is able to redistribute his momentum, however, he shows good speed in pursuit and takes great angles to the ball.

Hutchings has been the mainstay in the De La Salle defense the last several seasons, anchoring things on the inside. He figures to be a logical candidate to get time as either a middle or outside linebacker in a 4-3 system. He has played numerous positions on defense for the Spartans in high school, including all the spots in the linebacking corps and safety.

Ratings: Hutchings is a consensus four-star linebacker.

Vitals: Hutchings is 6'2, 215 pounds.

Other offers: Hutchings had 11 Pac-12 offers, and other big schools like Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Michigan, Nebraska and several offers from the SEC including Tennessee and Texas A&M.
