Quinton Powell commits to USC: Trojans nab another five star prospect

Quinton Powell announced on National Signing Day that he would sign with the USC Trojans.

Quinton Powell will help ease the wounds of USC's bleeding recruiting class, picking the Trojans in a TV ceremony on ESPNU. Powell ended up picking USC over Oregon, Miami and South Carolina. Powell was originally a Florida commit but reopened his recruitment in the winter and decided the Trojans were the place for him.

Powell is one of the top linebackers in the country, and even though he's a bit on the small size, he has the potential to be an excellent speed rusher and blitzer as he develops. Despite Powell's diminutive frame, he has a solid base that allows him to get away from blockers and move toward the ball carrier.

Here is some scouting from Bud Elliott from SB Nation on Powell, and how different he is from a typical recruit.

Powell is very different from most of its current backers. He's fast and long, but slight of build, and there are questions as to his ability to put on 20 or 30 pounds of muscle. At the very least, he should be able to be a very good nickel linebacker recruit.

After a steady stream of decommits (including three yesterday) USC should move up to 12 recruits for this class and will probably move slightly up the rankings. USC is still waiting for an official commitment from Nico Falah to see if they can get up to 13 prospects.

Ratings: Powell is a consensus four star linebacker.

Vitals: Powell weighs in at 194 pounds and measures 6-2.

Other offers: Powell had offers from the three big Florida schools (UF, FSU, Miami), and Arkansas, South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Clemson.

Recruitment timeline: Powell originally committed to Florida after several visits back in February, but he eventually reopened his recruitment after a few more visits and an in-home from a USC coach. Powell then visited USC a few weeks ago and discovered that the Trojans were the school for him.
