Georgia football recruiting 2013, National Signing Day recap: Quantity over quality

USA TODAY Sports

UGA was blessed with one of the nation's most talent-rich states, but enters 2013 with a deep, not great, class. See below for the full class and more.

Georgia had a somewhat disappointing signing day, but they still have a top 15 class thanks to a simply enormous load of signees, including 13 early enrollees.

The Dawgs have the No. 10 class per ESPN and Scout and No. 12 in the nation according to Rivals and 247. The reasoning behind it is just the sheer size of the class: 32 recruits, all of them three- or four-star recruits. That last tidbit is both a good thing and a bad thing: on the one hand, nearly half of Georgia's huge haul recruits are considered four stars by most services, but on the other, they don't have a single player considered a five-star prospect by any service. For a school of Georgia's caliber, and considering the Peach State's load included the No. 1 national recruit, that's a bit of a whiff by Mark Richt's staff, even if they did get some unreal numbers.

The strength starts on the defensive side of the ball: four four-star defensive backs, three four-star linebackers, and two four-star defensive ends.

Bud Elliott’s grade

C-. Georgia is bringing in quality talent, but in the SEC, that is not always good enough. In a loaded year for the state of Georgia, the Bulldogs signed just as many top-10 Peach State players as did the Ohio State Buckeyes, two: And none of the top seven players in the state will ink with Georgia. A ranking of 12 rounds good, but six SEC schools brought in better classes, and for a team that was five yards from playing for a national title, in a loaded state, that is a failure.

Top three players

Tray Matthews, four stars, S

The true gem of the class at safety is Tray Matthews, the 6'1, 215-pound beast of an athlete out of Newnan HS (the same program to produce Alec Ogletree). Matthews is a four-star prospect, and is rated the No. 7 safety in the country. He's also a US Army All-American, and, having already stepped foot on campus, could very well be manning the backfield for the Dawgs in September. He's a hard hitter, he's all muscle, and bank on it, he will be the next great safety at Georgia, even if it's not in 2013 (though it very well could be).

Brice Ramsay, four stars, QB

Ramsey's arm is good, but is not spectacular. At times, he struggles with accuracy, consistency and footwork. However, Mark Richt is a good developer of quarterbacks, and Ramsey definitely has tools to work and could develop into a very good player in time.

Leonard Floyd, four stars, LB

What you see on film is a big, athletic player with loads of skill. Expected to play OLB, Floyd played both ways in high school, and was seen by some as a possible TE. His athleticism and hands are that good. But his best attributes are getting after the QB. Floyd needs to put on a little weight, but don't be surprised if he competes for the OLB job vacated by Jarvis Jones opposite Jordan Jenkins. His technique obviously is an area for improvement, but the physical tools are something you just can't teach.

Top three rival classes

Florida absolutely dominated this year, unleashing a consensus top five class, while Auburn surged and Tennessee held together a decent class (all things considered). Georgia Tech wasn't much of a factor in fighting for in-state players, and that was before some decommitments.

If Georgia manages another SEC East championship, it'll be in trouble: Alabama had what most consider the top class in the nation, also starting on the defensive side of the ball.

Biggest National Signing Day drama

Georgia swung and missed big on signing day: they were gunning for five-stars Matthew Thomas, Montravius Adams, and Laremy Tunsil, and went ofer.

It did get former FSU commit linebacker Davin Bellamy, who is considered a four-star by some services. They also got DeVondre Seymour, an offensive lineman and the adoptive son of Richard Seymour.

Notes from SB Nation blogs

Dawg Sports looks on the bright side (though Alligator Army is celebrating UGA's misfortune):

It hurt to miss on Toby Johnson, Montravius Adams, Carl Lawson, Kelsey Griffin and Jay Woods, all of whom would have been a good fit on the defensive line. That being said, John Atkins, Moose Johnson, and Chris Mayes are all big guys who could play either nose or end. There have also been some rumors than 275 pound rising sophomore fullback Quayvon Hicks will move over to defense, the position at which many recruiting analysts thought he was best to begin with. Several quality defensive linemen said they didn't click with Rodney Garner and dropped Georgia as a result. New defensive line coach Chris Wilson is a proven recruiter, a dynamic young coach who won't be outworked. I think that's a huge upgrade for us.
