David Cornwell's recruitment continues to heat up: QB visiting Georgia

David Cornwell - David Cornwell

SB Nation catches up with one of the top QB recruits in the class of 2014.

The 2014 class is considerably better for quarterback recruits than the freshly signed 2013 recruiting class. And one of the better ones so far is David Cornwell, of Norman (OK) North High School.

Cornwell is considered a top-five pocket passer nationally, and is a consensus four-star recruit. I recently had the chance to speak with Cornwell for SB Nation.

Cornwell's best offers are from Auburn, Miami, Oklahoma State, Tennessee and Virginia Tech, and he has some interest in all of them, and is comfortable with the staffs at those schools. Several other big names may be close to offering as well, though the hometown Sooners don't seem to have him in their plans, having recently offered Justice Hansen of Edmund, OK.

This weekend, Cornwell will visit the Georgia Bulldogs. He's excited about the trip.

"Obviously, Georgia is in the SEC. It's the opportunity to play against the best," he said. "Coach Richt has produced a lot of NFL quarterbacks and has had quarterbacks start for all four years. He's not afraid to play the best, and hie quarterbacks go to the NFL."

The relationship with his future quarterback coach is important to Cornwell, as is the system. Cornwell is a good athlete for his size, but at 6'5 and 225 pounds, he is more of a pro-style passer than a dual-threat. Cornwell said he doesn't care about pro-style v. the spread, but wants a system to get him ready for the NFL.

The NFL is a big influence for Cornwell. He grew up a Colts fan, and attended Colts games for seven consecutive years, and patterns his game after some of the greats.

"I see myself as a combination of Ben Rothlesberger and Tom Brady, but of course Peyton Manning is my favorite."

Cornwell says he plans to commit in June. He wants to secure his spot and establish himself as a lead recruiter for whichever school he commits to.
