Patrick Mahomes commits to the Texas Tech Red Raiders

Patrick Mahomes repping for Tech prior to his commitment - Wescott Eberts (SB Nation)

The Red Raiders landed their top target at the quarterback position in 2014.

Since the late March decommitment of Florida quarterback prospect DJ Gillins, the Texas Tech Red Raiders have only offered one other signal-caller in Whitehouse prospect Patrick Mahomes and saw that focus pay off on Sunday with his commitment:

The three-sport star in high school ended his recruitment after a weekend visit to Lubbock for the Texas Tech spring game and is also expected to play baseball at Texas Tech.

The 6'3, 180-pound prospect is a star on the baseball diamond in addition to playing basketball at Whitehouse and is the son of former major league pitcher Pat Mahomes. A consensus three-star prospect who could see his stock rise with another strong season as a senior, the younger Mahomes is ranked as the no. 19 pro-style prospect in the country in the 247Sports Composite rankings and the no. 40 player in the state of Texas. Prior to his commitment, he held offers from Rice and Houston.

Mahomes is now set to join a former Whitehouse standout at Texas Tech, as wide receiver Dylan Cantrell signed with the Red Raiders in the 2013 class after forming a formidable combination with Mahomes as his quarterback last season.

More importantly for the current class, his commitment ensures that Texas Tech has a leader in recruiting at that position, where Mahomes could help with Red Raider efforts securing another East Texas product, wide receiver Kd Cannon, who was also in attendance at the spring game

A natural athlete, it may take Mahomes some time to learn the nuances of the quarterback position after playing safety as a sophomore for the Wildcats, but the fact that he threw for close to 4,000 yards and racked up 46 touchdowns through the air suggests that he learns quite quickly.

And at the Dallas Elite 11 camp, he didn't always spin the football perfectly on a windy day, but he did evidence the arm talent that makes him a legitimate baseball prospect, as well as the ability to quickly apply coaching tips given to him by the Elite 11 staff.

Mahomes also has above-average mobility for his position.

With his pledge, the Red Raiders now have nine commits in a class that ranks 15th nationally in the 247Sports Composite rankings.
