Auburn should be receiving good news Sunday in regards to another talented defender out of Mobile. This time, it should be Justin Thornton, a promising defensive end recruit out of Mobile (Ala.) Vigor High School.
Thornton is a consensus four-star recruit, and is widely considered one of the best 10 or so defensive ends nationally. He is a flexible, athletic, and lean at 6'5 and 222 pounds. His game is a little bit different than one might figure after looking at his frame -- he's not always the fastest off the line, though he does sometimes get a great jump, and he's definitely stronger than one might think.
While he is expected to choose Auburn over LSU and Texas A&M, Thornton's recruitment has already been wild. According to sources, he previously was set to commit to both Florida State and Florida, but that didn't happen, for reasons I'm not totally comfortable discussing.
Once Thornton gets his commitment out of the way, he'll be able to shut down his recruitment and focus on academics, to ensure he qualifies.
Craig continues hot run in Mobile
In early April, the Tigers added De'Shaun Davis, a talented inside linebacker from Mobile (Ala.) Vigor High School.
Wednesday, Auburn added the very talented Tre' Williams, also a linebacker, from Mobile's St. Paul's Episcopal School.
The work is being done by coach Dameyune Craig, a known ace recruiter in the Mobile area. There's one reason why Auburn brought in Craig, himself a former Tiger: to recruit Mobile. Craig was previously a coach of South Alabama, which is located in Mobile, and is himself a Mobile native.
Auburn class should grow to six
If Thornton does choose Auburn Sunday, the Tigers' class will grow to six commitments. Of those, two would be rated as consensus four-stars. Five would be from the state of Alabama.
