Torrance Gibson: 2015's biggest quarterback recruit battle

Torrance Gibson - via Land-Grant Holy Land

The dual-threat quarterback out of Florida is being pursued hard by Miami, Ohio State and many other top-tier programs.

Five-star quarterback Torrance Gibson is one of the top recruits in the country, ranked as the top dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2015 and the 11th-best player overall. Out of American Heritage School in Plantation, Florida, Gibson is being recruited by major programs across the country, and it is quickly turning into one of the most hotly contested early recruiting battles in the class.

Land-Grant Holy Land was able to talk with Gibson about Ohio State in April, and he offered some early details about his recruitment.

Of all the schools recruiting you, are there any coaching staffs that stand out or that you have the best relationships with?

What about Ohio State stands out to you?

Well, I've known the coaches since 8th grade. They really treat me like family up there.

Who is the main coach from Ohio State recruiting you? How often do you speak, and what do you guys talk about?

Coach Urban Meyer. We've only spoken once. He offered me a scholarship, wanted me to come up for a visit, asked how my family was, and how life was going.

LGHL's Miles Joseph named Gibson as the top target for the Buckeyes in the class of 2015, noting how well the player's skills fit within Ohio State's offense.

He has the size, speed, and arm needed to succeed in Urban Meyer's spread offense and if he doesn't work out behind center for whatever reason, he could move outside to receiver and be just as good, if not better.

Over at State of the U, Cameron J. Underwood also identified Gibson as a top target for Miami in the class of 2015, making some pretty impressive comparisons at quarterback and wide receiver.

Gibson's name is going to be a the top of recruiting boards across the country. He is a supremely talented player whose raw athleticism makes fans and coaches alike salivate. The smooth lefty already has offers from nearly every school in the country, and will only see his national profile increase as the 2015 class moves into their senior season. I've heard him described as "Left Handed Terrelle Pryor". So yeah, he's got talent. Others (myself included) think his best position is Wide Receiver (he's Calvin Johnson part 2 at that spot), but Gibson wants to play QB, and figures to stick at QB.

Gibson is also being targeted by LSU, and is listed as the only quarterback target for the Tigers by And the Valley Shook.

Torrance Gibson (6'4", 200 lbs., Fort Lauderdale, Florida) HUDL: The lone QB with an offer currently, the athletic 5-star Gibson caught the eye of Cam Cameron and LSU is up there with the likes of Ohio State and Miami.

Auburn is in the mix for Gibson as well, and College and Magnolia has him on top of their list of offensive targets for the Tigers.

Gibson is the No. 1-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the 2015 class and the No. 29 player in the nation. The thought is that Ohio State leads with Miami not far behind, then Florida, LSU and Auburn all bunched up behind them. He recently said he is interested in Auburn. The Tigers hope to get him on a visit sometime this spring.

Notre Dame is targeting a few quarterbacks in the class of 2015, as they hope to find a replacement for rising junior Everett Golson. Gibson is one of the names they're going after the hardest, among other players in Florida.

Notre Dame is all up in Florida already for the 2015 cycle (~30% of offers in the Sunshine State right now) and I like that they've gone hard after American Heritage quarterback Torrance Gibson. He might still be a tough pull from the Hurricanes but I hope the staff keeps targeting hyper-athletic quarterbacks who can run the ball and Gibson fits the bill.

Gibson also took a visit to Florida, and has said he would be interested in Michigan if they offered.
