Rutgers' strength has been it's defense, which has allowed only 10.3 points per game, fifth best in the FBS. Most recently, the Scarlet Knights topped Connecticut, 19-3, on Oct. 6. Kicker Kyle Federico injured his hip in the UConn game and his status is uncertain; in his place backup kicker Nick DeLouisa missed an extra point, and the coaching staff responded by holding open tryouts to try to find a new kicker.
Syracuse snapped an eight-game FBS winless streak when the Orange topped Pittsburgh, 14-13, on Oct. 5. The Syracuse defense came alive against the Panthers, holding a previously-formidable Pitt rushing attack to a pitiful 27 yards on 37 carries.
The last two times these teams have met, the game has gone down to the wire, with Rutgers taking the 2011 matchup, 19-16, in double overtime and the Orange winning, 13-10, in 2010. The Scarlet Knights certainly hope it won't come down to field goals on Saturday.
