Is West Virginia a state? Don't be so sure you know the answer, man.
Visited K-State today. A highlight: WR Chris Harper said a few Wildcats debated whether West Virginia is, in fact, one of the 50 states.

Harper, by the way, said he was on the right side of the argument. And he knew the capital.

One possible reaction, I guess: "lol jocks dumb." But that reaction is no fun at all and unbearably smug and assumes nobody's ever joking about anything. I feel this ...
To be fair, West Virginia was still part of Virginia when Bill Snyder was in college.

... is on the right track.
As residents in a state with its own very complicated Civil War history, surely these young Kansans were commenting on Abraham Lincoln's stance on West Virginia's statehood and the Mountain State's own secession from secession. And once you visit (and immediately fall in love with) West Virginia, the real question becomes whether it's not a state, but rather a whole other country.
That's obviously what's going on here.
