The Notre Dame Fighting Irish rallied to nudge out the BYU Cougars 17-14 and stay undefeated at 7-0.
Here are the highlights of Notre Dame's 17-14 victory over BYU.
Tommy Rees would get the Irish off on the right foot, including an excellent 33 yard throw to Tyler Eifert. Notre Dame would miss the field goal to end the drive though, and BYU would move the ball down the field into the Irish red zone. Unfortunately, the drive stalled when Riley Nelson was sacked by Stephen Tuitt and intercepted by Manti Te'o.
Notre Dame would strike first, as an impressive 29 yard grab by Eifert and a solid 22 yard scamper by Cierre Wood would set up a Rees-to-Eifert connection and a 7-0 Irish lead. BYU would respond though with two touchdowns in the second quarter thanks to some nice running by Jamaal Williams, an interception on Rees, and two goal-line touchdown passes by Nelson.
Notre Dame would cut into the lead with a 28 yard Kyle Brindza field goal. The score was set up thanks to Theo Riddick not going down on first contact and churning forward for 55 yards.
Trailing 14-10, the Irish would drive down the field for the go-ahead score. Rees would find Jones for 31 yards down the left sideline, Riddick would power for a 19 yard gain to get Notre Dame into first-and-goal, and Atkinson would take an end-around and juke a BYU defender out in space to put Notre Dame up 17-14. The Irish defense would hold down the Cougars from there.
