After the recent news broke that Ohio State will play a pair of games against TCU later this decade, the school has revealed a plan to avoid scheduling what are known around the sport as, "cupcake games," going forward. Typically, elite programs will schedule games annually against easy opponents that are nearly guaranteed victories.
But according to Buckeyes athletic director Gene Smith, Ohio State won't be following that practice any longer:
We will play two more BCS games [in 2018]... That year [2018] is a snapshot of future years. As we move forward, from 2018 and out, our goal is BCS only. We are looking at top ranked teams, 1-50 teams.
At the moment, the team also has the Cincinnati Bearcats on its 2018 non-conference schedule, so the Buckeyes certainly aren't shying away from their apparent plan. For a team that often takes on at least one opponent from a lesser conference like the MAC or Sun Belt every year, this is a clear move towards a more challenging schedule.
