West Virginia vs. Texas: Mountaineers get by Longhorns, 48-45

The No. 8 West Virginia Mountaineers went on the road and defeated the No. 11 Texas Longhorns, 48-38, in Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

In what turned out to be the offensive shootout that many expected, West Virginia was able to outlast the Longhorns with big plays down the stretch.

Heisman-hopeful Geno Smith was superb once again for the Mountaineers, throwing for 268 yards and four touchdowns on 25-of-35 passing. Smith did have two fumbles, but luckily for him they ended up becoming footnotes instead of headlines.

However, the star of the show was running back Andrew Buie. The sensational sophomore rushed for 208 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries. Buie also was a threat in the passing game, collecting three receptions for 66 yards.

Running back Joe Bergeron kept the Longhorns' hopes alive for much of the evening, scoring four touchdowns on the ground. David Ash put forth a nice effort, completing 22-of-29 for 269 yards and throwing for a score in the losing effort.

Box score hero: Andrew Buie. The running back was unstoppable throughout the affair, gaining 208 yards on 31 carries with a pair of touchdowns. Buie also caught three passes, amassing 66 receiving yards.

Rankings ramifications: West Virginia will undoubtedly move up with the loss of the LSU Tigers ahead of them. The Longhorns on the other hand will drop a few spots with the home loss.

Did they cover?: Texas was favored by a touchdown and failed to cover in the loss.

Next week's schedule: The Mountaineers will travel to take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Saturday while the Longhorns host the No. 17 Oklahoma Sooners.
