The Jayhawks almost pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the season but could not finish the deal against the Red Raiders.

The Kansas Jayhawks almost completed one of the biggest upsets of the season against the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Saturday, but fell just short in double overtime, 41-34.

The Jayhawks came in as major underdogs but gave the Red Raiders all they could handle through four quarters and the two overtimes. They took the lead for the first and only time of the game in the first overtime, up by 7 after the first possession of the period.

After trailing by 4 at the half, the Jayhawks were down by 10 with a little more than 10 minutes remaining in the game. But James Sims rushed for a 3-yard touchdown run with 8:59 remaining in the game to pull the Jayhawks within a field goal. A field goal by Nick Prolago tied it at 27 with 41 seconds remaining and the Red Raiders missed a field goal at the end of regulation, sending the game into overtime.

In overtime, Sims scored again on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Michael Cummings but the Red Raiders answered with an Eric Stephens 1-yard touchdown run. The Red Raiders added another touchdown and the Jayhawks went four-and-out on their next possession, ending their upset bid.

Tony Pierson rushed for 202 yards on 16 carries and James Sims rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries in the loss. Texas Tech quarterback Seth Doege put up 476 yards passing with three touchdowns and one interception.

Kansas dropped to 1-9 overall, 0-7 in the Big 12 and Texas Tech improved to 7-3, 4-3 in the Big 12.

Box Score Hero: Doege finished 45 of 59 passing with 476 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. The Red Raiders only got 56 yards rushing, which makes Doege's numbers that much more impressive.

Rankings Ramifications: The Red Raiders could see their ranking dip just a little bit, even in victory, due to the Jayhawks being a one-win team and the Red Raiders needing two overtimes to win.

But Did They Cover?: Texas Tech was a 24-point favorite heading into the game and got way more than they bargained for from Kansas.

Next Week's Schedule: Kansas will host the Iowa St. Cyclones Nov. 17 and the Red Raiders will travel to face the Oklahoma St. Cowboys.
