College football rankings: Alabama loses, and BCS chaos arrives

Alabama's loss to brand-new SEC team Texas A&M, at home, means we might be staring at our first BCS Championship Game without a SEC team in seven years.

No. 1 Alabama has fallen at the hands of No. 15 Texas A&M, 29-24, and the race for the national championship is just a little bit more wide open now. Assuming no more upsets for the rest of the way, expect either Kansas State or Oregon to take over the top spot, but don't expect the Tide to fall far -- they're hardly out of the running yet.

Oregon should be able to overtake K-State in the BCS standings if they both go unbeaten the rest of the way, but the Wildcats' opponent tonight, TCU, is better than Oregon's, Cal. So if they both win tonight, the switch won't come this weekend. No matter -- they'll both be in the top 2, which is all you need.

Notre Dame could slide up to No. 3 with a win, but I'd imagine the distance between the Irish and Alabama (I'm dropping them to No. 4, but I'm just guessing here) would be closer than Irish fans and those sick of the SEC will approve of.

At the bottom of the Top 10, it's hard to say just how high the Aggies will rise -- especially considering their two losses were close and to other Top 10 teams -- but let's say they sneak in? Other options are Oklahoma, Clemson and Stanford, any of which could do.

  1. Kansas State
  2. Oregon
  3. Notre Dame
  4. Alabama
  5. Georgia
  6. Florida
  7. LSU
  8. South Carolina
  9. Florida State
  10. Texas A&M
Elsewhere, No. 9 Louisville lost, and Florida really should drop for needing a blocked punt to beat a Sun Belt team, but they have head-to-head over LSU, which people care about.
