Wofford vs. South Carolina final score: Gamecocks wake up late, escape with 24-7 win

Streeter Lecka

Wofford game South Carolina all they could handle on Saturday. The Gamecocks needed a late outburst to escape with a 24-7 win.

The South Carolina Gamecocks looked like they were in trouble for most of the day against the Wofford Terriers. The two were locked in a 7-7 tie at halftime, and South Carolina wasn't able to take the lead until the middle of the fourth quarter. The Gamecocks will walk away with a 24-7 win, but the scoreline does not show how close the game was for the vast majority of it.

The Gamecocks took the lead in the second quarter when Kenny Miles scored on a 2-yard run, but Wofford would tie the game right before halftime on an Eric Breitenstein touchdown run. The game remained in a deadlock until Adam Yates hit a 23-yard field goal with less than 12 minutes remaining for South Carolina to make it 10-7.

The Gamecocks then scored two touchdowns in a on- minute stretch to put the game out of reach. Ace Sanders had a touchdown catch from Connor Shaw, and then Akeem Auguste returned a Breitenstein fumble for a touchdown to make it 24-7.

Shaw finished the game 16-20 for 122 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Kenny Miles led the rushing game with 127 yards, and Ace Sanders led the team with 35 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Breitenstein led the Terriers with 137 yards rushing and a touchdown on 29 carries. Wofford, who runs the triple option offense, attempted just three passes on the day.

Box Score Hero: Kenny Miles had 127 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries to pace the Gamecocks.

Rankings Ramifications: South Carolina entered the game ranked No 9. Barring a loss by someone in front of them, they won't go up.

But Did They Cover? The Gamecocks were 30.5-point favorites coming into the game, so didn't cover the spread.

Next Week's Schedule:

South Carolina: 11/24, at Clemson

Wofford: Season over
