USC vs. Notre Dame update: Irish score, Max Wittek has an arm

Stephen Dunn

A question asked before the game: is Max Wittek any good? We're in the middle of finding out! Notre Dame leads, 3-0. Head here for score updates and discussion.

Part of you believed right up until USC's offense took the field that Lane Kiffin had cooked up this whole Max Wittek scheme just to surprise Notre Dame. Admit it. You had to see for yourself that Matt Barkley was not in the game. Welp, USC's offense is on the field, and Barkley remains in track pants.

This did happen before the game, though:

The Wittek era (since he will be the favorite to start for the Trojans next year) began with a quartet of handoffs. They all went fine. His first pass was a rollout toss to Robert Woods, which sailed high. He's pretty excited. His second was a play action bomb to Marqise Lee, which struck the mixed-up receiver right in the forearm. And the third was a screen that struck the turf amidst a meddling pass rush.

We've learned Wittek can throw a football really far. That's about it. If not for a little confusion, he could've dropped a perfect touchdown pass in Lee's hands despite double coverage.

So, who is Max Wittek? As we noted earlier in the week, he's hardly a scrub.
