The Kent State Golden Flashes struggled, but managed to best the Akron Zips by a score of 35-24 on Saturday.
Kent State moved to 8-1 on the season and 5-0 within the MAC on Saturday, besting Akron by a score of 35-24. Akron kept it close throughout, trailing by just four points late into the fourth quarter. But with plenty of time still left on the clock, the team made the decision to go for it on its own 35-yard line on a fourth-and-1.
They didn't get it, as Jawon Chisholm was stuffed for a rush of no gain. Kent State took that opportunity to go six plays and 35 yards en route to a 15-yard touchdown rush from Trayion Durham. The extra point from Freddy Cortez was good and sealed the deal for Kent State.
Akron got the ball back with 38 seconds left, but quarterback Dalton Williams was sacked by Roosevelt Nix for a loss of 14 yards to really seal the deal for the Golden Flashes. In the end, the Akron offense out-gained the Kent State offense by a margin of 438 yards to 364, but still couldn't secure the win.
Box Score Hero: The Kent State rushing attack gets the nod here. Dri Archer carried the ball 11 times for 126 yards and a touchdown, while Trayion Durham carried the rock 24 times for 107 yards and three touchdowns. Spencer Keith added five carries for 28 yards and a touchdown of his own.
Rankings Ramifications: Kent State was 4-0 in the MAC before this game, and Akron was 0-5, so it's self explanatory. There will be no chance either team ends up in the national rankings, regardless.
But Did They Cover? Kent State was favored by a whopping 20 points in this one, so they didn't cover on any books. Depending on where you grabbed the over/under, you could have done well, considering. It was just right on the edge, as noted by SB Nation's NCAA football odds page.
Next Week's Schedule: Akron will take on Massachusetts in its penultimate game Nov. 10 at 2:00 p.m. ET. Kent State will face Miami (OH) in its next outing, at 1:00 p.m. ET on the same day, with two more games remaining.
