Demetrius Hartsfield injury: Yet another major Maryland injury

Rob Carr

The Maryland Terrapins have lost another key player, as senior linebacker Demetrius Hartsfield has torn his ACL and will miss the rest of the season. Hartsfield leads the team in tackles by a sizable margin and was on some preseason all-ACC lists.

The Maryland Terrapins have lost another important player to a season-ending knee injury, as linebacker Demetrius Hartsfield will miss the rest of the season after tearing his ACL.

Hartsfield's Maryland career is over, as the fifth-year senior will not be able to play in any of the Terps final three games. Hartsfield is arguably the best player on Maryland's defense and certainly the most experienced, leading all active players in the ACC with tackles. The middle linebacker was well ahead of any other player on the team in tackles in 2012, with 78 -- nobody else has more than 55 -- and had been named a second-team all-ACC linebacker before the season by Phil Steele and Athlon after being named an honorable mention by the league in 2011. He also had 3.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries, and an interception.

Hartsfield is the fifth Maryland player to suffer a season-ending ACL tear this year: three, C.J. Brown, Perry Hills, and Caleb Rowe, were quarterbacks, but the team also lost defensive lineman Andre Monroe.

Junior Bradley Johnson, who has one tackle in four games, is listed behind Hartsfield on the depth chart at one inside linebacker spot.
