Boise State nose tackle Mike Atkinson has played his last game for the Broncos. The senior tore his ACL in last Saturday's 21-19 home loss to San Diego State, coach Chris Petersen confirmed on Monday.
Anchoring an otherwise young defensive line, Atkinson had racked up 37 tackles with 2 forced fumbles and an interception return for a touchdown for the Broncos' defense. That TD was the Broncos' lone score in a 7-6 win over BYU in September.
Ricky Tjong-A-Tjoe is expected to slide over to the nose tackle spot to take Atkinson's place, while Darrin Koontz is also expected to help fill the void. Boise State (7-2, 4-1 Mountain West) is on the road to face Hawaii this weekend.
Boise State all of a sudden finds itself with thinning depth on defense. Starting safety Lee Hightower could miss a third straight game this weekend for violating team rules. DT Greg Grimes and nickelback Dextrell Simmons are both listed as questionable with injuries.
