Marian kicker Mike Josifovski hit two key field goals for the Knights in the dying minutes of the game to win the Knights their first NAIA title.
Mike Josifovski hit a 26 yard field goal to win the NAIA national championship for the Marian (Ind.) Knights, 30-27, over the Morningside (Iowa) Mustangs. It's Marian's first NAIA title in only the sixth season of existence for their football program.
Josifovski hit a 35 yard field goal to force overtime for the Knights, about a minute after Joel Nixon hit Kyle Schuck for a seven-yard touchdown pass with 1:04 remaining to give the Mustangs the lead. Less than two minutes earlier, Adam Wiese hit Nathan Jones for a 61-yard touchdown pass to give the Knights their first lead of the game.
Wiese went 25 of 39 for 233 yards, a touchdown and an interception for Marian. Tevin Lake carried the load rushing the ball, getting 23 carries for 104 yards and two touchdowns. Jones was the Knights' leading receiver, with 99 yards on five receptions and a touchdown.
Nixon was 22 of 39 for 228 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Mustangs, and Fred Jones rushed for 118 yards on 22 carries and added another two touchdowns. Schuck was the team's leading receiver with 74 yards on four receptions, and Joel McCabe had eight receptions for 60 yards.
