Paul Petrino hired as Idaho head coach, per report

Nelson Chenault-US PRESSWIRE

The Arkansas offensive coordinator will take over the miserable Idaho program next season

Arkansas offensive coordinator Paul Petrino will become the head coach at Idaho, taking over the Vandals from former coach Robb Akey, who was fired in October.

Petrino, who assumed the Razorbacks' play-calling duties this season after his brother, former head coach Bobby Petrino, was fired, steered an underwhelming Arkansas offense that still managed to average 301.5 passing yards per game -- the 22nd best total in the nation.

Petrino has almost exclusively been a part of his brother's coaching staffs throughout his career, with stops at Arkansas, Illinois, Louisville, Southern Mississippi and with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons.

Petrino will now be tasked with turning around a moribund Idaho program. The Vandals went 1-11 last season and finished 123rd in the country in scoring offense, and now turn to Petrino's offensive expertise to try and find a few more points next season.

Idaho's only win last season was against fellow WAC member New Mexico State, which also went 1-11 last season and 0-6 in the conference.
