After reportedly turning down the job earlier this month, Butch Davis is expected to be named the new head coach at FIU, though the report has been denied.
Update: FIU denies the report. Bruce Feldman reports "some skepticism" concerning the original report.
Florida International finally got their man? After reportedly being rebuffed by Butch Davis earlier this month, FIU is expected to name him its new head football coach, according to a report from Patrik Nohe of the Miami Herald.
Davis, who did not coach in 2012, reportedly turned down the job in early December. He has a relationship with FIU athletic director Pete Garcia dating back to Davis' time as the head coach of the Miami Hurricanes. What led to the apparent change of heart is still unknown.
At FIU, Davis will take over for Mario Cristobal, who was fired after going 3-9 in 2012.
Davis has had plenty of success as a college head coach, but was fired at North Carolina after an NCAA investigation revealed academic misconduct and improper benefit violations. Davis went 28-23 at North Carolina and has a career record of 63-43 as a college head coach.
Known as one of the best recruiters in the country, Davis spent the 2012 season as a special assistant for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
