Margus Hunt starring in Hawaii Bowl, on pace for season's worth of production

SMU defensive end Margus Hunt is dominating one of the country's best offenses in his last college game.

Coming into Monday night, most of us expected Fresno State's offense to blow SMU's defense off the field as the Mustangs were Aloha Stadium's traditional pieces of floating paper garbage. That has not happened. At the break, it's 22-0, SMU, with Fresno State's only real scoring opportunity dying near the goal line as the first half clock ended.

The player of the first half was big (6'8) defensive end Margus Hunt, who entered the season as a potential first-round draft pick, but underwhelmed for much of the year. He looks like he's trying to win back all that status all at once, making himself a complete menace and constant companion for Bulldogs quarterback Derek Carr:

Regular season Tonight

Tackles for loss 8.5 3

Sacks 6 3

Fumbles forced 0 2

Safeties 0 1

Hunt's the Estonian track athlete who took up football just three years ago after arriving at SMU and has developed a knack for blocking kicks, being way tall and frustrating quarterbacks. No kicks blocked yet tonight, but the night is young. Super young in Hawaii, via time zones.

After this performance, plus his just about inevitable eye-popping NFL Combine performance, we can once again expect to hear Hunt's name called pretty early in April.
