Butch Jones denies report he's Colorado next head coach

Frank Victores-US PRESSWIRE

The Buffaloes reportedly landed on Jones to replace the fired Jon Embree, but he's denying it.

More than a week after Colorado dismissed Jon Embree, Colorado has hired Cincinnati's Butch Jones to be its next head football coach, according to the Denver Post -- though Jones has denied the report, as has Cincinnati. Wednesday, Jones attended the Belk Bowl press conference in Charlotte, which his Cincinnati team will play in.

For what it's worth:

Jones spent most of Monday in Boulder touring campus and meeting with athletic director Mike Bohn and various administrators. According to the Denver Post, a flight was scheduled to leave Rocky Mountain Airport at 7:30 p.m. ET headed for Cincinnati, but Jones remained in Boulder longer than expected.

A sixth-year head coach, Jones is 23-14 in three seasons with the Cincinnati Bearcats. Prior to coaching the Bearcats, Jones guided the Central Michigan Chippewas to a 27-13 record over three seasons.

A different Denver Post report early Monday morning said that Bohn and Colorado were prepared to offer Jones a contract of five years and more than $13.5 million.

BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall was also reported to be a top contender for the job. Jones would be replacing Jon Embree, who was fired on Nov. 25 after going 4-21 in two seasons as head coach of the Buffaloes.
