College football rankings, Week 6: West Virginia, Texas sure to rise

The West Virginia Mountaineers and the Texas Longhorns are ready to rise in the top 25 after big victories over Baylor and Oklahoma State respectively. Stanford will probably fall after an upset loss to Washington.

Week 6 featured some shaking in the top 25 thanks to one big top ten upset. There were some pretty fun games filled with high-scoring action and clutch fourth quarter play, and two Big 12 teams has impressive performances that should allow them to move on up.

Here are the results from the top 25 of Week 6 of the college football season.

#1 Alabama beat Mississippi 33-14; the Crimson Tide struggled to move the football offensively, but took advantage of three Ole Miss turnovers and turned them into 14 points while also getting a Christion Jones kickoff return.

#2 Oregon had a slow start with Washington State and only led by four at halftime, but reeled off four straight touchdowns in the second half to pull away with a 51-26 victory. Kenjon Barner compiled over 200 yards from scrimmage and had four touchdowns.

#3 LSU had another uneven performance against Towson, falling behind 9-7 before the Tigers poured on 24 points in a row. Still, LSU only won 38-22, which gives the Tigers two straight meandering performances before their matchup with Florida.

#4 Florida State took advantage of three South Florida turnovers, including a fumble return for a touchdown to beat the Bulls 30-17. EJ Manuel had an efficient game and overcame the rushing of B.J. Daniels to lead the Seminoles offensively.

#5 Georgia dominated the ground with 165 rushing yards from Keith Marshall and 130 rushing yards from Todd Gurley, as the two Bulldogs combined for five touchdowns in a 51-44 victory over Tennessee.

#6 South Carolina came back from a ten point halftime deficit to beat Kentucky 38-17. The Gamecocks defense held the Wildcats to 61 yards of offense in the second half and got more efficient passing from Connor Shaw and rushing from Marcus Lattimore.

#8 Stanford fell to Washington 17-13 in a big upset. Josh Nunes and the Cardinal offense struggled to move the football, and the defense made some critical late errors to give up two Husky touchdowns.

#9 West Virginia beat #25 Baylor 70-63 in the highest scoring game in Big 12 history. Both teams combined for over 1,500 total yards of offense, with over 1,100 coming through the air.

#12 Texas edged out Oklahoma State 41-36 in a more subdued shootout. The Longhorns and the Cowboys exchanged the lead four times in the fourth quarter, with David Ash leading a game-winning drive in the final minutes.

#14 Ohio State defeated #20 Michigan State 17-16, with the Buckeyes overcoming three turnovers in the process by shutting down Le'Veon Bell and the Spartan run game.

#15 TCU held off SMU 24-16, with the Horned Frog defense forcing six turnovers. Casey Pachall overcame his accuracy issues to throw two touchdowns.

#17 Clemson outdistanced Boston College 45-31 with steady doses of Tajh Boyd and Andre Ellington, and the Clemson defense shutting down the B.C. rush game.

#18 Oregon State won a late night thriller against Arizona, emerging victorious 38-35. Both Sean Mannion and Matt Scott threw for over 400 yards apiece, with Mannion throwing the game-winning score with over a minute left.

#19 Louisville overcame the downpour and an 11 point deficit in Hattiesburg to beat Southern Mississippi 21-17. Senorise Perry and Jeremy Wright combined for over 200 yards rushing on the ground, with Perry scoring the game-winner.

#22 Nebraska rallied behind Taylor Martinez to score 20 straight points in the second half and lead the Huskers to a 30-27 victory over Wisconsin.

#24 Boise State nearly gave up a 25-0 lead by allowing four New Mexico touchdowns in the second half, but held on for a 32-29 victory.
