If an offensive player did this to a defender, it would be called clipping and quite possibly result in a fight.
It's been a well-officiated Orange Bowl so far! There was a miss on a quite obvious pass interference call near the goal line, followed by this hit on Florida State quarterback E.J. Manuel.
There's no reason to declare it a dirty hit, but it's certainly unnecessarily low, with a point of impact right at the back of the knee. As you can see, the defender wasn't pushed into that angle, and he wasn't tripping. At best, he made an unsafe choice.
Manuel was okay, but we should hope the refs have their eyes wide open for any more of this. Or retorts.
Also, Matt Millen during the replay:
"Hits him down low, which is nice and safe!" Matt Millen, what?
