Brian Kelly Eagles rumors: Coach likely angling for Notre Dame contract extension

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

The Fighting Irish head coach doesn't appear likely to actually take the Philadelphia Eagles job.

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly interviewed for the Philadelphia Eagles' vacant head coaching position Tuesday, according to reports from ESPN's Chris Mortensen on the evening SportsCenter. The interview comes a day after Kelly's Fighting Irish were annihilated by Alabama in the BCS National Championship Game.

Since the interview, Kelly has left on a vacation. A decision will come after he returns, though most believe the report there's little chance he'll take the job has been leaked in order to get Kelly a lucrative contract extension in South Bend. Skepticism only grew when NBC's Keith Arnold revealed what connected Mortensen to the Kelly story:

Kelly is 28-11 in three seasons at Notre Dame, having led the program to its first BCS National Championship Game appearance after a perfect 12-0 regular season. Prior to taking the top job in South Bend, Kelly went 34-6 in three seasons at Cincinnati. A native of Massachusetts, he cut his coaching teeth at Michigan's Grand Valley State. He has no background in professional coaching. He is also a graduate of Assumption University and a devout Catholic, making his departure from the nation's most pretigious Catholic university football program all the more unlikely.
