Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany says the league is considering new division names for when Rutgers and Maryland join the conference in 2014. The current Leaders and Legends designations have not been well-received
"Obviously we got some acceptance [with Legends and Leaders], but not as much as we would have liked," Delany said.
That's putting things mildly. Those division names also led to some unintentionally amusing juxtaposition, as two football programs in the Leaders Division -- Ohio State and Penn State -- were ineligible for postseason play in 2012 thanks to NCAA sanctions. Leading the way in postseason bans is probably not what the Big Ten had in mind there.
The league recently posted a poll on its website with several division name options -- the more traditional East and West, Leaders and Legends and Inner and Outer. Would Inner and Outer provide any more clarity than the current designations? Probably not, unless one is intimately familiar with midwestern geography. Those division names would open up many new avenues for jokes, though, which is the important thing.
What that poll really seems to be saying is that the Big Ten is entirely out of ideas. Please help Jim Delany, America.
