Logan Thomas reportedly staying at Virginia Tech: A look at the 2013 Hokies

USA TODAY Sports

Logan Thomas will reportedly be sticking around for another year at Virginia Tech. How will he fare under a new offensive coordinator?

Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas has decided to pass on the 2013 NFL Draft and remain a Hokie for one more season, according to 247 Sports. Thomas is scheduled to make his announcement at approximately 3:45 p.m. ET on ESPN.

The senior-to-be has thrown all but 22 passes combined for Virginia Tech in his two years as a starter. He will now look to improve in his final year with plenty of new starters and a new offensive coordinator.

Just two of the five offensive linemen from the Hokies' bowl win over Rutgers will be back. Virginia Tech will also have to replace its top three pass-catchers. J.C. Coleman does return at running back. He was second on the team in carries to Thomas, while also catching 21 passes.

Coleman and Thomas may be getting more carries under Scot Loeffler. In two stops as offensive coordinator at Temple and Auburn, he was run-heavy. Last season, the Tigers ran the ball 59 percent of the time. The run game was at least somewhat successful, as Auburn ranked 34th in Football Outsiders' rushing S&P (14 percent better than average).

Loeffler got his start as a quarterbacks coach, but he might not be of much help to Thomas from a statistical standpoint. Auburn was one of the worst passing teams in the country, and 28.5 percent worse than average according to S&P.

The Hokies will be hoping Loeffler will fare better against the Alabama defense than he did last season. Virginia Tech opens up the 2013 schedule against the defending champions in the Georgia Dome. As for the rest of the year, Thomas and his teammates avoid Florida State in the regular season, while getting Duke, North Carolina, Pitt and Maryland at home. They'll go on the road to face Georgia Tech, Miami, Virginia and Boston College as they look to get back to the top of the ACC.
