USC coaching rumors: Kevin Sumlin takes the compliment, Mike Riley denies interest

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Sumlin and Riley both took questions about the USC job Tuesday, but both denied having any interest.

Now that USC's head football job is open, rumored candidates across the country are obviously getting questions about it. Oregon State's Mike Riley flatly denied on Tuesday that he would be interested in the job. Texas A&M's Kevin Sumlin also denied interest, but pointed out the rumors are a symptom of success.

"It means you're winning and doing things the right way," Sumlin said about the speculation.

Vanderbilt's James Franklin, another hot name rumored in connection with the USC opening, took a different approach and dodged several questions about the matter during his press conference Monday. He kept his focus on the team's win over UAB on Saturday and its upcoming game against Missouri.

"Anything outside of that is outside of our control," Franklin told the press.

Plenty of other names have been bandied about already and not all of them are from the college ranks: St. Louis Rams head coach Jeff Fisher and Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio are also rumored to be on USC's list of potential targets.
