BYU lights up Aggies in 3rd quarter

Playing without star quarterback Chuckie Keeton, Utah State lost control of its game with BYU on Friday night. After three quarters of play, the Cougars hold a 31-7 lead.

The Aggies only trailed 17-7 at the half, but they were unable to get any kind of offense going in the third. Craig Harrison, who came in relief of Keeton, has completed 13-of-27 passes for just 109 yards.

Taysom Hill connected with Mitch Mathews on a six-yard touchdown strike to cap off BYU's first drive of the second half. Hill and Mathews then hooked up for their third touchdown connection of the night, a 43-yard pass play that pushed the lead to 31-7.

On the night, Hill has completed 16-of-29 passes for 218 yards and the three aforementioned touchdowns. The Cougars have also carried the football 37 times for 133 yards.

BYU leads Utah State at halftime

The BYU Cougars hold a 17-7 lead over the Utah State Aggies at halftime.

With the score already 10-7 in BYU's favor midway through the first quarter, both defenses started to settle in a bit. The lone scoring drive of the second quarter was capped off with a 30-yard touchdown strike from Taysom Hill to Mitch Mathews that gave the Cougars their 10-point edge.

The big story of the game is Utah State quarterback Chuckie Keeton going down with what appeared to be a serious knee injury. Keeton's left knee twisted while he scrambling out of the pocket, and he immediately looked to be in pain as he fell to the turf. He is not expected back in the second half. Aggies players were clearly distraught by the injury to their junior signal caller and they'll really have to dig deep if they hope to make a comeback in the second half.

Hill has been impressive for BYU so far, completing 9-of-19 passes for 114 yards and the aforementioned touchdown. Keeton's replacement, Craig Harrison, has completed 8-of-13 passes for just 42 yards.

BYU takes early lead on Utah State

There was shortage of scoring from BYU and Utah State in the early going of Friday night's showdown at Romney Stadium. Midway through the second quarter, BYU holds a 10-7 lead.

The biggest story of the game has been the injury to Chuckie Keeton. Utah State's star quarterback went down with a knee injury late in the first quarter and was helped off the field by team trainers. His return is highly doubtful.

BYU took a 7-0 lead on the first play of the game. Kyle Van Noy intercepted an errant throw from Keeton and took it 18 yards to the house. The Aggies responded on their next drive, though, with Keeton connecting with Travis Van Leeuwen on a 7-yard touchdown strike to tie the game up.

The Cougars came right back on their next drive and capped it off with a 27-yard field goal off the foot of Justin Sorensen.
