College football 2013 news: Clowney injury surprises South Carolina coaches

We wrap up the news, events and injuries from an eventful weekend of college football.

South Carolina

Star defensive lineman Jadeveon Clowney missed the Gamecocks' narrow win over Kentucky with bruised ribs, but that news surprised South Carolina coaches, who seemingly did not expect the junior to miss the game. Head coach Steve Spurrier even said "We will welcome him to come play for the team if he wants."

The Bulldogs suffered four key injuries in their 34-31 overtime win over Tennessee. Running back Keith Marshall, wide receiver Michael Bennett and wide receiver Justin Scott-Wesley all injured their knees, and punter Collin Barber suffered a concussion.

Florida State added injury to insult, knocking Terrapin quarterback C.J. Brown out of the game on a nasty hit from Jacobbi McDaniel in the second quarter. Back-up Caleb Rowe came in to replace him, and the Terps lost 63-0.

The Longhorns squeaked by Iowa State Thursday night without starting quarterback David Ash, and they'll have to come up with some magic next weekend without him as well when they face Oklahoma. Ash is battling lingering effects from a head injury.

In other Texas news, wide receiver Mike Davis has been "reprimanded" by the Big 12 following his late hit on Iowa State defender Deon Broomfield, but will not be suspended.

The Gophers lost 42-13 against Michigan Saturday, and did so without head coach Jerry Kill, who missed the game after suffering a seizure early Saturday morning.

The Bears' tough season continues. Starting center Chris Adcock will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury after starting 15 of the 19 games he has played in since 2010.

A small advertising plane had to make an emergency landing on a large tailgating field in Gainesville, with no serious injuries suffered in the crash.

Tight end Colt Lyerla continues to find himself in trouble with new head coach Mark Helfrich, as the starter didn't even make the travel squad to Colorado this weekend. Lyerla was the Ducks' third-leading receiver in 2012, and was not at the stadium for Oregon's big win over Tennessee in September.

Utah State

Terrible news for the Aggies, as star quarterback Chuckie Keeton will miss the remainder of the season with a left knee injury. Keeton had thrown for 17 touchdowns in the early season and had established himself as a fringe Heisman candidate.

Fresno State

The Bulldogs thrashed Idaho 61-14 Saturday night, resting their starters after taking a 47-0 lead at halftime. Head coach Tim DeRuyter was furious at the half, accusing Vandal head coach Paul Petrino of telling players to hit Fresno State players late, especially quarterback Derek Carr.

West Virginia

The Mountaineers were on the wrong side of a record-setting offensive showcase by Baylor Saturday night, and the fan base is not happy. Among the voices speaking out is former star quarterback Pat White, who compared head coach Dana Holgorsen to former USC head man Lane Kiffin, and suggested West Virginia should fire Holgorsen.

Linebacker Cassanova McKinzy was removed from the field in the Tigers' win against Ole Miss on a stretcher and returned to the sideline in a neck brace.

GameDay is coming to Seattle, when the Huskies host the high-flying Oregon Ducks next week.
