Kicker Cody Journell dismissed from Virginia Tech football team

Andrew Weber-US PRESSWIRE

The troubled kicker's career is over with the Hokies.

Virginia Tech starting placekicker Cody Journell has been dismissed from the program for a violation of team policies, the team announced on its Twitter account.

Journell had a troubled career with the Hokies -- he was arrested before the Sugar Bowl after going to the residence of two Virginia Tech basketball players with an air gun, resulting in his suspension for the team's Sugar Bowl appearance, and he was suspended for the team's game against Marshall this season. In Journell's absence, punter Ethan Keyserling missed all three of his field goal attempts.

Journell, a senior, had made 10 of 16 field goal attempts and 24 of 26 extra points this season. A three-year starter, he hit 20 of 25 field goals last year and 14 of 17 field goals as a sophomore in 2011.

Our own Gobbler Country said that while the news was big, it certainly wasn't all that surprising given Journell's history.

No further reasoning has been given for Journell's dismissal besides the generic "violation of team rules."
