Louis Nix injury: Notre Dame DT out for year with torn meniscus

Matt Cashore-US PRESSWIRE

The Fighting Irish lose a big force in the middle.

Notre Dame defensive tackle Louis Nix III will be out for the year after having season-ending surgery on his torn meniscus, head coach Brian Kelly announced Thursday. This was only the latest in a series of injuries nagging Nix this season.

Losing Nix is a tremendous blow to the Notre Dame defense, as the 6'2, 342-pound senior is considered by many to be a first-round talent and one of the best defensive linemen in all of college football. Named to the Bednarik and Maxwell Award watchlists before the season, Nix had 27 tackles (2.0 for loss) at the heart of Bob Diaco's 3-4 defense this season, although those numbers do not truly quantify his impact.

With Nix out of the picture, the Fighting Irish will likely turn to some combination of Kona Schwenke and Tyler Stockton, his backups on the two-deep.

The Irish will host 7-3 BYU this weekend before traveling to Stanford for a season-ending road game.
