The quarterback who backed up Ryan Tannehill and Johnny Manziel will likely get his opportunity to start - although it will be at UTEP, Jameill Showers' next destination according to UTEP's Rivals site.
Showers is the biggest get for new head coach Sean Kugler: with Mike Price retiring after nine years at the helm of the Miners, Kugler's first recruiting class was nothing special - all two-stars, with one-three star. Showers is a legitimate big time quarterback who just never got the opportunity to play. At first, he was behind Tannehill, who wound up being a first-round draft choice this year in the NFL. Then, he was usurped Manziel, who won this year's Heisman Trophy. In different scenarios, he could have worked out with the Aggies - SB Nation's Good Bull Hunting called him a "outstanding, selfless football player" while that was while giving him an award for the best second-team player - but instead, he decided to transfer rather than ride the bench for two years.
Showers had 359 yards passing with two touchdowns and an interception on 49 passes for the Aggies - including an 8-for-8 appearance with a touchdown against Auburn. He's a dual threat capable of running a 4.6 40, per Rivals. One would expect a guy who drew praise at an SEC school to perform decently against Mountain West competition. Since he gets his degree from Texas A&M in June and will be pursuing a graduate degree at UTEP, he'll could able to play right away - and will likely be able to start, as Nick Lamaison, the starter for last year's 3-9 Miners team, graduates. Showers has gotten unlucky thus far in his football career, and now he might have his chance to shine.
Showers is from Alpine, Texas, about a three-hour drive from El Paso - close, by Texas terms. He'll play against his former teammates Nov. 2, when the Miners head to Kyle Field for a late season non-conference game.
