LSU's Alfred Blue apologizes 'if anyone was hurt' by gay comments

The LSU running back backtracked on his comments in a Reveille story from this past week and issued an apology.

LSU running back Alfred Blue issued an apology on Friday after making some stinging anti-gay comments in a story published by the LSU student newspaper, The Reveille.

I understand that my comments may have sounded insensitive to those who read the Reveille article on Friday. I in no way meant to belittle any person’s way of life and feel that everyone deserves a chance to become whatever they want to be. One of my comments that was left out of Friday’s article shows this. I told the reporter that if any person can help to contribute to the team, then that is the bottom line.

I apologize if anyone was hurt by my comments and also to everyone that I may have let down.

Several LSU football players were asked what their reaction to a gay teammate would be, and while some players had very positive and accepting responses, Blue went the other way, saying gay people were "sissies" essentially incapable of playing football, which is both hurtful and untrue.

It's good that Blue apologized, although the "if anyone was hurt by my comments" line is a bit of a cop out. However, he's still a young kid, and hopefully he can use this as a learning experience. I know I said a lot of dumb things when I was a junior in college, but I had the benefit of not having them broadcast to the rest of the world.
