Last season, Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel claimed the award, beating out Alabama center Barrett Jones and North Carolina guard Jonathan Cooper. It was the third year in a row the Outland was awarded to an offensive tackle, as Jones won it playing the position in 2011 and Wisconsin's Gabe Carimi took it home in 2010. Former Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh was the last defensive player to win the award, earning it in 2009.

In recent years, winning the Outland has led to a high selection in the NFL Draft. Six of the last seven winners have gone on to become first-round picks, with five players going off the board in the top six selections. Joeckel was taken with the second overall pick in April's draft.

A total of 15 schools have multiple Outland winners, and Nebraska leads the way with nine. Oklahoma and Ohio State have five and four, respectively, and five schools can claim three players to win the award.
