Connor Brewer, Texas transfer QB, headed home to Arizona

The former Arizona high school standout left the Longhorns and their crowded quarterback situation in July.

Former Texas reserve quarterback Connor Brewer announced his decision to transfer to Arizona early on Tuesday morning. Brewer left the Longhorns in July in pursuit of a situation that would offer more playing time in the near future. He redshirted as a freshman in 2012.

Brewer is joining a crowded quarterback competition in Tucson. The Wildcats are looking for a replacement for Matt Scott, and Brewer is joining last year's backup, B.J. Denker, Jesse Scroggins (USC transfer), Nick Isham (Louisiana Tech transfer), redshirt freshman Javelle Allen, and true freshman Anu Solomon. Brewer will have a chance to win the job, but it won't be handed to him.

Brewer was ranked as the No. 4 pro-style quarterback in his class, per 247's composite. But the Arizona native didn't have the career arc he had hoped for at Texas. It wasn't a problem that he redshirted as a freshman with David Ash and Case McCoy the obvious starter and backup, but he evidently saw that he was being squeezed out of the picture at quarterback.

Once Brewer announced his departure from Texas, it didn't take long for some big-name programs to come calling. The former Arizona high school standout heard from Alabama, Notre Dame, Stanford, Tennessee, UCLA, Arizona and Arizona State. Many of those programs offered him scholarships out of high school.

He seemed like an outside shot to even become the third-string quarterback after Texas' spring camp. Throw in a February arrest, and things just weren't working out for Brewer in Austin. He became the third Texas quarterback to transfer in a little under two years, joining SMU's Garrett Gilbert and Colorado's Connor Wood.

Coming out of Paradise Valley (Ariz.) Chaparral High School, Brewer was a consensus four-star prospect and ranked among the country's top 10 pro-style quarterbacks. He was listed by Texas at 6'2 and 195 pounds.
