Ole Miss got off to a hot start, starting out the game with two touchdowns (a run by Jeff Scott and a pass from Bo Wallace to Donte Moncrief) to take a 14-0 lead. Texas responded resoundingly with 23 straight points, and took a 23-17 advantage into the half.
In the second half, Mississippi struck first, as Wallace ran 15 yards for a touchdown to take the 24-23 lead. Wallace then completed a 17-yard touchdown strike to Evan Engram, and Scott returned a Texas punt 73 yards for a score and the 37-23 Rebel lead.
Ole Miss put the game away with a late 8-yard touchdown run from Jaylen Walton, making it 44-23.
For Texas, it's the second straight blowout loss, after a 40-21 defeat at the hands of BYU last week. After that loss, the Longhorns replaced defensive coordinator Manny Diaz with Greg Robinson. We will have to wait and see what the fallout after this crushing blow.
Box Score Hero: Jeff Scott. The senior had 20 carries for 162 yards and a touchdown, and had the punt return touchdown that really blew things open.
Rankings Ramifications: Ole Miss was ranked No. 25 in both polls, while Texas received votes. The Rebels should move up a few slots, while it's doubtful the Longhorns earn many (if any) votes next week.
But Did They Cover? Depending on where you look, Texas was between a 1.5- and 3-point favorite, but they lost resoundingly.
Next Week's Schedule: Ole Miss has a week off before visiting Alabama. Texas starts conference play next week when they host Kansas State.
