Boise State's insane 2-pointer

Here we see a Boise State trick play working during a clutch moment in a big game. That's nothing new, except that this end around-pass from Joe Southwick to Matt Miller to Jake Hardee looked certain to fail for almost its entire lifespan. The Broncos lead, 40-34, with under five minutes to go.

Fresno State leads Boise State after 3rd quarter

The Fresno State Bulldogs are looking to make a statement against Boise State on Friday night. Through three quarters, the Bulldogs hold a 34-26 lead over the Broncos in front of a capacity crowd at Bulldog Stadium.

Leading 24-19 at the half, Fresno State came out firing once again. Derek Carr completed 1-yard touchdown pass to Davante Adams to give FSU a 31-19 lead.

Midway through the third quarter, it appeared the Bulldogs had the Broncos stopped deep in their own territory, but a gutsy fake punk call from coach Chris Petersen worked to keep Boise driving. It seemed like the momentum might've been turning, but Fresno State promptly came up with another stop and took possession of the ball once again.

On the ensuing drive, Colin McGuire hit a 28-yard field goal to give the Bulldogs a 34-19 lead. Boise State fired right back, though, and after a big kickoff return, Aaron Baltazar ran 35 yards to the end zone untouched to cut the deficit to 34-26.

This game has been wild since the opening kickoff, and it appears we're in for another wild finish in the Mountain West.

Fresno leading Boise State at halftime

The Fresno State Bulldogs lead the Boise State Broncos, 24-19, at halftime in what could be a clash of the two best teams in the Mountain West Conference.

With the score tied 10-10 after a wacky first quarter, Derek Carr connected with Josh Harper on a 21-yard touchdown pass to give Fresno State the 17-10 lead. Boise State responded with a touchdown of its own with a strike from Grant Hedrick to Troy Ware, though Boise's attempt to catch the Bulldogs off guard with a two-point try failed, keeping the score at 17-16.

Fresno State marched the ball down the field once again two possessions later and found the end zone. Carr connected with Harper yet again to give the Bulldogs a 24-16 lead with just 2:28 remaining before halftime.

The Broncos moved the ball down the field behind do-it-all quarterback Joe Southwick in the final minutes, but the drive stalled late as they reached the red zone. They settled for a 31-yard field goal from Dan Goodale to make the score 24-19 just before the break.

Carr played really well in the first half, completing 16-of-28 passes for 237 yards and three touchdowns. Perhaps most importantly, the senior did not turn the ball over. Joe Southwick was equally impressive, throwing for 219 yards and rushing for 30 more.

Boise State, Fresno State tied 10-10

Playing in front of a capacity crowd at Bulldog Stadium, the Boise State Broncos and Fresno State Bulldogs are tied, 10-10, on Friday night.

The Bulldogs took the early advantage on their first drive of the game. Derek Carr capped off a nine-play, 58-yard drive with a 14-yard touchdown strike to tailback Josh Quezada to give Fresno State a 7-0 lead.

The Broncos responded with a touchdown drive of their own a couple possessions later. Joe Southwick continued to move the ball down the field through the air, setting up tailback Jay Ajayi for the one-yard touchdown run from the goal line.

A 68-yard deep pass from Carr to Greg Watson got the Bulldogs all the way down to the 1-yard line, but the Broncos were able to make a stand and force just a field goal to keep the deficit at three. Boise State then marched down the field in the closing minutes of the first quarter and converted a 31-yard field goal to tie the game at 10.

Carr's effort has been a mixed bag so far since he is just 5-of-14 through the air for 110 yards. Southwick has been impressive and accurate, completing 7-of-11 passes for 99 yards. Neither team is yet to really get their ground game going, though it's still early. Southwick currently has a team-high 19 yards on the ground.
