Boise State vs. Fresno State recap: Bulldogs rally for 41-40 win

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

Bulldog Stadium saw over 1,000 yards of offense and 81 points in an old-fashioned shootout on Friday night in Fresno

Derek Carr threw four touchdown passes Friday night, but it was a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter by Josh Quezada that vaulted the Fresno State Bulldogs over the Boise State Broncos, 41-40, in a shootout Friday night at Bulldog Stadium in Fresno.

The two teams combined for 1,083 yards and 60 first downs on the night.

The Bulldogs took a  34-19 lead with 1:58 remaining in the third quarter on Carr's fourth touchdown pass of the night. Boise State answered with a pair of touchdown runs by tailback Aaron Baltazar to cut the lead to 34-32. Then, after a successful onside kick, quarterback Joe Southwick ran for another score to give the Broncos a 40-34 lead.

But Carr and the Bulldogs responded with a 13-play, 87-yard drive for the winning score.

Baltazar ran for 92 yards and two touchdowns in the loss for Boise State.

Box Score Hero: Carr was the standout here as he threw for four touchdowns and no interceptions for Fresno State. Carr completed 39 of 60 passes on the night for 460 yards.

But Southwick was impressive in his own right, throwing for 313 yards and running for 54 more. He even punted once for 46 yards!

Rankings Ramifications: Fresno State was ranked 25th in the USA Today Poll, and received the second-most votes of non-ranked teams in AP. Boise hardly got any votes in either poll. The Bulldogs could rise a few spots with the win.

But Did They Cover? Fresno State opened as five-point favorites, according to Odds Shark. They failed to cover the spread.
