College football Coaches Poll, Week 5: LSU jumps Louisville, Fresno State rising

Crystal LoGiudice-USA TODAY Spor

Arizona State and Michigan State fall out of this week's Coaches Poll.

The USA Today Coaches Poll remained largely unchanged after a week devoid of upsets. With 18 of 20 ranked teams winning, the voters opted to keep the status quo.

Alabama lost a few first-place votes, but retains the top position in this week's USA Today Coaches Poll. After Saturday's win over Colorado State, the Crimson Tide received 59 of the 62 available first-place votes. Oregon, which got three first-place votes despite having the week off, is ranked second. Ohio State, Clemson, and Stanford round out the top five.

Louisville's lopsided win over Florida International couldn't keep the Cardinals from falling out of sixth. LSU and Louisville are followed by Florida State, Texas A&M, and Georgia, who all won convincingly Saturday.

Just two ranked teams lost Saturday: No. 23 Arizona State lost to No. 5 Stanford, and No. 23 Michigan State fell against No. 21 Notre Dame. Both the Sun Devils and Spartans have dropped out of the poll, replaced by Wisconsin and Texas Tech. Fresno State, who defeated Boise State Friday night, moves up from No. 25 to No. 23.

The USA Today Coaches Poll, along with the Harris Poll and a handful of computerized polls, is used in determining the two teams who play for the BCS National Championship and the eight other teams to play in BCS bowl games.
